As with any new activity, there is some level of danger. The same would be true with rock climbing, cycling, running, or even yoga. But it’s very simple to drastically reduce your risk of injury with strength training, since a professional program would balance out your body for optimal strength and power, thereby decreasing your risk of injury in other activities.
What you need to do is:
– Choose a program that’s appropriate for your ability level
– Prepare your body to work out
– Understand correct form
Lifting Heavy Makes Women Bulky
A lot of girls have this mind, that if they lift some weights they’ll become bulky like men.
Let’s set one thing straight, women don’t produce enough testosterone to add significant amounts of muscle mass quickly or easily. Muscle mass takes years and years of hard work to build and many female bodybuilders choose to enhance themselves chemically because they have such a hard time gaining muscle mass.
If you lift weights and eat healthy foods, your muscles will get stronger and denser; you will burn the fat on top of your muscle and you will get that “toned” look that you’re after.
Cardio Burns More Fat
Cardiovascular training absolutely has its place, but it’s not the only path towards fitness.
Believe it or not, strength training will produce a more efficient weight loss effect than an equal amount of cardio.
When you strength train, your muscles are broken down and then rebuilt over the next 24-48 hours. While your body is rebuilding those muscles, it’s recruiting more calories and energy to make the process happen.
What this means is that your metabolism operates at a faster level even while you’re sitting on the couch after a workout.
You Can Sport Reduce Fat
Your body cannot spot reduce fat in specific locations. If you have flabby arms or a big stomach, doing thousands of bicep curls and thousands of crunches won’t help.
Your body is genetically predisposed to storing fat in certain locations in a certain order. When you start to lose weight, your body will lose the fat you currently have in a certain order as well.
No amount of targeted exercise will change how that fat disappears. When you reduce your body fat levels, your body will choose where it wants to lose fat from first.
So no, you can’t technically spot-reduce, but you can use strength training combined with sound nutrition and intelligent cardio to get the lean, toned body you desire!
Now that the myths are debunked, it’s time to consider weight lifting!

As most of my readers know, I have a passion for Fitness. Actually Fitness and Health had been my passion for a long time, I used to do hiking, tyrolienne, cardio classes, martial arts…but didn’t focus to make it a career and kept it a project on hold…
Since I was a kid, I used to see my friend K grabbing his gym bag and going to uni to study Physical Education but I wasn’t courageous enough to get enrolled in such a major.
Time went by and I started going to the gym and this is when I discovered my real passion for sports.
Whenever I’m exercising you can feel that I’m in another world. The girls at the gym used to love practicing whenever I’m around. For them, I used to give life to the courses.
But cardio classes didn’t get me hooked up… I kept my fitness project hanging…
Almost 2 years ago, I met my Coach Fares at Healthy Lifestyle, and started training with him. I started lifting weights and discovering the potential my body has. I was giving all my power, I was determined since day 1 that I wanted to make a huge change and I did it.
During this time, my coach saw something beyond that in me, he saw that I could do more than that and encouraged me to follow my passion. It took me a while to realize that now is the time to follow my dream and I decided to enroll in a Personal Training Course.
So yeah, I got back to the classroom with a huge book to learn, and it’s one of the best decisions I ever took!
As I was inspired by my coach, I want to inspire, motivate and help others to bring the best in them!
I enjoy training at the gym because I see my friends and we empower each other, but during the weekend and the days that I don’t hit the gym I like to enjoy nature, see different landscapes, enjoy fresh air….
Outdoor exercising, also called “Green Exercise”, can be as simple as walking outside, to bicycle riding, hiking, rope skipping, running… It is effective, it can be more fun and has appealing advantages:
1- Fresh air
Outdoor training brings you fresh air, it is revitalizing and energizing. When exercising outdoors, you will improve your sense of well-being , increase alertness, you will sense decreased anxiety and lower resting heart rate.
Sunlight gives our bodies a much-needed dose of vitamin D, a ‘superstar’ nutrient which helps promote the absorption of calcium and provides strength to bones.
3- Mental Stimulation
When exercising outdoor your mind becomes more aware of the changing terrain, your mind has to focus differently than at the gym.
4- Tone your whole body
During your outdoor training, you get off your routine and face different terrain, which will make different muscles work and lead to physical benefits.
5- Psychological Benefits
Studies show that when training outside, people are more enthusiastic, they show higher self-esteem, lower tension and depression levels.
Fresh air and increased oxygen helps release the feel-good brain chemical, serotonin, meaning your outdoor training sessions not only help keep you fit and healthy, they put you in a fantastic mood too.
And not much time is required to reap these psychological benefit, the first five minutes of green exercise show the greatest psychological benefit.
To help you get started with outdoor training, wake up early when it’s still not too hot, your energy is higher and the air is generally clean.
And don’t forget to drink enough water, you don’t want to get dehydrated!
Lately, a lot of brands are creating awareness for healthy eating, healthy living, healthy lifestyle… One of them is Sylphide the famous cheese spread brand, who invited me and other bloggers for a “Get Back In Shape” Wellness Day.
It was supposed to be an outdoor event but due to the bad weather, we met at Memac Ogilvy’s offices in Sin El Fil.
We started with an hour of Fitness training including the desk cycle, where the fitness trainer gave us tips and exercises to help us stay fit.
We had a small break, where we enjoyed fresh juices, and tasted Sylphide cheese in different forms. There are different varieties from Sylphide cheese, goat, blue and emmental with only 25 calories!
Then we had a nutrition session on how to stay fit, where the nutritionist questioned us about our eating habits and gave us tips on how to incorporate healthy food items, and she showed us of different ways to eat Sylphide.
After that we had a Body Balance Session, a Yoga based class that improves mind, body and life. It includes a series of simple yoga moves and embraces elements of Thai Chi and Pilates. Breathing control is a part of all the exercises.
Thank you Sylphide for this remarkable wellness day, we left feeling fit, healthy and happy!

I used to think that I eat very healthy and was convinced that my lifestyle was very fine the way it is.
Until last May (2015) when my coach Fares asked me to start my food journal for a period of time and I had to show it to him.
The look on his face when he asked what is this? I used to eat healthy food, but the quantity wasn’t right at all and the distribution of meals during the day had to be modified…
So he gave me a new meal plan, it was a hard one for me, since it was the first time I watch closely what I eat and I wanted to really see some improvement on my body!
Keeping track of my meals helped me identify my goof habits and my bad habits. This is how my food diary helped me watch my weight:
1- My food diary was showing me exactly what I eat
The food diary I showed my coach, contained healthy food, bu the quantity needed modification.
I used to eat a lot of fruits during the day, fruits are healthy but when wanting to lose weight, few fruits can be included and should pay attention to the timing (before working out)
I used to eat a lot of dried fruits, the quantity was also reduced.
2- My food diary showed me what I needed to eat
The food diary showed me that I wasn’t eating enough protein during the day.
I decreased the carbohydrates sources and protein portions were increased over lunch, snacks and dinner.
I also reduced my alcohol intake, or if I wanted to drink, I was aware which alcoholic drinks have more calories than others…
3- My food diary showed me how to control my calories
Since I was noting down everything I eat during the day, I was able to calculate the calories I’m having.
So when I’m approaching the number of calories I should have during the day, I stop eating.
4- My food diary tough me self-control
Since I started to write down what I eat, my food diary helped me not overindulge, except for the days my coach allowed me to have a cheat meal.
When I was more conscious about the decisions I should take, I was more hesitant to eat desserts or carbs I wasn’t allowed to have.
It was a kind of culinary confessions on paper, making me aware each time I choose something to eat.
5- My food diary helped me identify habits
The purpose of my food diary was beyond tracking my meals and calories.
Recording the timing of what I eat and the activities that surround my eating habits, my food journal helped me identify consistent eating patterns. This helped me create new habits and reprogram those that were holding me back.
With an emphasis on eating habits instead of numbers, the food diary continues to have value even after stop doing it.
There are many different ways to keep track of what you eat, whether on a piece of paper, an excel sheet, or an app on your mobile phone, you can track the times you eat, the meals and portions.
I created a google doc that I update regularly from my computer and my mobile phone.
Whether you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle or trying to lose weight, keeping track of what you eat daily is a necessity to stay on track.
After starting the fitness section on my blog and the pictures of my progress, a lot of you were curious of where I’m training and who is my coach.
In today’s post, I’ll introduce to you Eliane and Fares coaches and owners of Healthy Lifestyle in Antelias.
1- Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got started in training?
Fares: I had passion for fitness since I was a kid, I bought my first 2 dumbbells when I was 12 and used to workout daily after school.
It all started at the gym, everyone was impressed by the improvement I’ve made and they were so eager to know how I did it. So, I started coaching my friends first, and then I grabbed the attention of others who came to me for assistance…
Later I decided to dig in this field to a deeper level. I subscribed to a well-recognized educational agency that is aggregated with U.S, took lots of certifications and fell in love with this major
2- Since when did you start with the “Healthy Lifestyle” concept? And can you tell us more about it?
Fares: In 2010, after making my first physical transformation and helping a lot of friend sculpt their bodies, I got more than 20 clients in less than 1 year just through word of mouth. This is when Healthy Lifestyle came to life. 2 years later we rented a small location (40m2) and moved with our members.
2 years after we bought a bigger location to allow more people to join us and live a Healthy Lifestyle. We help people get Strong & Fit in a Friendly & Private Atmosphere.
3- How do you simultaneously help clients at different levels of physical ability during a workout class?
Eliane: At Healthy Lifestyle we believe there is no one-program-fits-all! Each member has his own needs, weaknesses & strengths. This is why we always start our journey with a consultation where the member writes down all his goals, the reasons why he/she is starting a new journey and his/her previous healthy history. Later we set a date for the Fitness Assessment (a full session) to monitor the body composition, measurement, functional movements, muscular strength, aerobic capacity, flexibility & back health. A tailor-made fitness program is created for every member based on the fitness assessment results, his goals & healthy history written during our first consultation
4- Any tips for staying focused?
Eliane: Let no one discourage your ambitions. Believe in yourself & be your own motivation. For daily inspirations & motivations, feel free to like us on Facebook: Healthy Lifestyle Page Or follow us on Instagram: Eliane & Fares
5- What does it take to be successful as a fitness instructor? Fares: With more than 2000 trainers in Lebanon being certified yearly, having a CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) certification is not enough anymore. It is just the beginning of every coaching journey. Here are 2 successful tips to rise above:
Never stop evolving: When you’re not training clients, spend your time reading fitness books that will help you design the best programs and training protocols. Attend fitness conventions and training workshops. The more you educate yourself, the more highly you’ll be valued by your clients.
Have a positive personality: This is the hardest part but as they say: Fake It Until You Make It. People are coming to their workouts to distress from their daily jobs and the last thing they need is someone negative. A successful coach is always smiling and cheering his members up. His main purpose is finding every single method to help them improve the quality of their lives after every single workout.
I always hear women saying that they don’t want to do weight lifting, because they will become bulky and robotic like men and the effect is not nice at all!
I hear others telling me, I want to do cardio now, shred a bit of weight and then move to weight lifting!
Ladies, let’s clear things up! Weight lifting will not turn you into Big Hulk, it is your best and fastest way to shred those extra kilos. Cardio is an important tool for weight loss, but it is not the only style of training that you should be focusing on!
Did you know that Marilyn Monroe used to lift? And she was the sexiest woman ever!
Lifting weights strengthens and tones your muscles in a way that no other form of exercise will. See how:
1- It improves your body strength
A very prominent and striking way that shows how your body is benefiting from weight lifting, is that your body gets stronger. Stronger, not just at the gym and how much kilos you can lift, it will help you with your daily life activities, like moving and bending throughout the day, carrying things at home, work…
2- Improves your posture
When done properly, weight lifting can do wonders for your posture. I never realized that until I saw before/after pictures of me!
Weight Lifting like dumbbells, dead lift, squats, can greatly improve your posture, increase your back strength, improve your booty’s strength, and simultaneously, improve your pelvic posture.
Your belly pooch naturally diminishes because your hips aren’t extended forward, which appears as that lower pooch.
You’ll also find you’re able to stand taller throughout the day due to a better posture. This happens by weights improving your back strength, as well as your upper body strength.
3- It strengthens your bones and muscles
Weight training improves bone density, which will reduce the risk of fractures. It also strengthens and reshapes your muscles to improve your balance .
4- It burns more calories
Heavy weight training exercises get your heart racing and burn more calories, this is because they require more energy and effort and consequently it will lead to burn more calories.
Plus studies show that after a total body workout with just three big muscle moves, your metabolism can be boosted for up to 36 hours post-workout.
In addition, weight training will increase the amount of lean muscle in your body, which is a very good thing, because the more muscle you have , the more you burn fat!
5- It improves self-esteem
Being strong and healthy is an ultimate confidence boost! You’ll become more satisfied about your appearance and more positive and optimistic in general!
To note also, that weight lifting alone will not give you the results you want, like if you train hard but still have a burger or a pizza every day, you will not be helping you body. You need to watch your diet, have a healthy lifestyle and you will do a huge difference with your progress!
I will share with you before and after pictures of my body to see for yourself. I was shocked when I saw the huge transformation I did without noticing. I was just being committed and loving the process and my body all the way!
I want to thank my Coach Fares from Healthy Lifestyle, for his guidance and for always being a great support, I couldn’t have done it without him. I want to also thank my family and friends for their moral support and encouragement! Love you all :*
I was so happy with my fitness results yesterday, and I’m eager to share them with you!
For those who weren’t following me, TWO months ago I decided to go on a strict fitness plan and I had the target of loosing 5% fat.
The beginning of my journey was really hard, as I am a person who LOVES and enjoys food and especially cookies, bacon, bagels… It was very hard for me to work on my mind, stay focused, ditch the carbs and sugar and stick to my Protein!
With time and of course with the help of my coach Fares, I learned to control my cravings and find substitutes when I’m really hungry. He taught me how to check my calories intake and how to maintain a good balance. I started shopping the right kind of foods and cooking my own meals.
I kept my shopping list simple: Chicken, Tuna, Turkey, Steak, Broccoli, Zucchini, Coli-flower, Cucumbers, Strawberry, Peanut Butter, Dried Almonds and Yogurt. This way when I head to the supermarket I just get in pick the stuff I want and I don’t get distracted by all the tempting items on the shelves.
I was so determined that I want to be so proud of myself and I want to go through the process till I reach my target. I went through some weak nights, and especially during the events and Iftars I was attending, it was so hard for me no to eat things I’m not allowed to and especially sweets! But when I let myself indulge I got right back on track the second morning, train harder and get even more focused!
What was fueling me up was watching how my body was reacting, my tummy which is my focal point from the process, was shrinking, lines are still a bit shy, and especially that I have a white skin they’re not appearing as fast, but I’m getting there!!
When I meet my friends and hear their encouraging words, and how they’re following up my fitness journey, it makes me wanna do more. Because at this point it’s not just only about me, I know there are many of my readers who are being inspired and I can’t fail them!
So after two months of experimenting, I went back on the scale and the results were very satisfying for me.
With all the distractions I had, I reached 80% of my goal! I lost 3.5% of fat and gained more muscles. I’m very proud of what I have achieved! I still have a little to reach my ultimate goal and I won’t get defeated until I get there!
I want to remind you of a very important point to me, I chose to go through this fitness plan because I Love My Body, and my aim is not to get skinny, my target is to get healthier, stronger and leaner!
My friends at the gym keep laughing at me how I constantly check my muscles, but I feel very proud when I see my shoulders muscles growing, triceps showing and abs getting stronger and I think this is the point that everyone should choose to get fit for.
If you want to lose weight the easy way, by starving yourself and not doing any exercise, you are not loving your body, you are reducing your metabolic rate and you risk of gaining much more weight than you lost!
My journey till now wasn’t easy I can assure you that, but it’s totally worth it!!
Four weeks ago, I started a special meals plan prepared by my Coach Fares. He is not just any coach, beside his love for Fitness, he dug deep in the world of Nutrition, because he believes that improving a poor diet can create rapid and significant increase in fat loss and muscle-building progress. He is so dedicated, inspiring and encouraging!
As a food passionate, the first few days were very hard for me but my body got accustomed to the routine and the first 3 weeks went smoothly, until I cheated and ate that fondant when I was attending the S. Pellegrino & Vogue event at Le Gray. It was so tasty and worth it 😉
And then I got weaker and started craving unhealthy food
But I was determined, fighting those cheesy ideas, and I wouldn’t let a piece of cookie rule my fitness plan!
So I started to find ways to keep me motivated and to stay on track
1- Keep track of my progress
Since I started my fitness plan, I started a meals journal, that I update every time I eat something.
When you don’t know how much you’re eating, you don’t realize how many calories you are consuming on a daily basis. This way, if I cheat, I note it down in my plan and I will really feel guilty and will avoid doing it in the future.
I also note down my exercises at the gym and increase the difficulty of my workouts in order to get better results.
I also measure my weight once per week at the same time and I’m noting my improvement from one week to another.
2- I watch and admire my body daily
You will think I’m turning into a lunatic here, but studies prove that loving and accepting your body is important for overall health and fitness.
Every morning, I admire my body in the mirror and see the changes happening, and when I started seeing those lines getting defined (they’re still a bit shy I know) but that is making me want to work harder and harder to see them growing!
3 – I asked for others support
People around you affect you, they can help you reach your goal or the opposite, will make you fail! And asking for support in your process is not a sign of weakness, other people can keep you motivated to lose weight.
My main support is my young sister, she’s doesn’t let me eat unhealthy stuff and especially on Sunday, when all the family is gathered and they’re eating all kinds of stuff.
It took some time for Mum to understand what I’m doing here, no more insisting on eating that special dish she does and she’s leaving the kitchen for me each night to prepare my healthy meals.
4 – I put my motivation in front of me
My target is to have a flat belly and that’s because I want to be able to wear a crop top and feel just like a boss!
So i found this adorable crop top at “Ma Petite Boutique”, I got it on hold but I’m not wearing it until I have completely reached my goal!
5- I Never miss my Gym session
I am very committed to my gym sessions, I love gym and when I’m doing sports I’m in a different planet. My gym buddies are supportive, we always push each other to stay on track, it can get competitive some times which makes it even better. How many weights are you lifting Basso? 😉
6- I found a partner
Finding a partner with the same goals as you is very beneficial and improves the odds of diet success, as you always encourage and support each other.
I found that my young cousin Sara is excited about getting in shape for summer and she needed a bit of help, I started giving her some few tips and we started jogging twice per week in the morning and sharing our stories
Patience is important because it shows your commitment to yourself.
Reaching my goal will not happen like magic, it needs time! I had set a time limit of 2 months to remove 5% fat, a month passed and starting the second. I have to be very patient with myself and how my body is reacting.
The process is slow and requires endurance, but it is as rewarding sticking with it as it is starting it. And by learning to build patience, then we are building a pattern of consistence and we will be less likely to struggle and give up on ourselves.
8- Rewarding myself
Sticking to a strict meals plan is not easy, it needs a lot of hard work, unless everyone would have a perfect body! rewarding oneself can be an incentive to keep going. But of course these incentives shouldn’t be related to food! It could be new gym gear, a new dress, a new pair of shoes, a massage…
I am pampering myself tomorrow, will let you know how it goes 😉
And the most important thing, is no matter where you have reached, you always have to be Proud of Yourself! You have to be Proud of every single achievement you did till now, even if it’s a tiny one, with time and dedication You will Reach what You always wanted!!
